WHEN I WORE OUT MY TIME
There was no air in the air,
no way to breathe— breathe-right
was out of reach, and my army gas mask
was buried in a pile of collectibles in the attic.
Not wishing to disturb my wife
at 3:00AM—she would call an ambulance,
and I didn’t want to disturb my neighbors
just like my father did when I was a kid,
and our house was on fire.
I decided to lean back and let go,
and see if I could sense my soul
leaving my body and follow it
wherever it chose to roam.
My only regret was not telling my wife
how much I loved her every hour of every day.
